Otchere will be joining\u00a0UTRGV after\u00a0playing the last 2\u00a0seasons\u00a0at Stony Brook\u00a0of the American East Conference. While at this time\u00a0at Stony Brook\u00a0Otchere earned all-defensive honors and was named American East defensive player of the year. UTRGV head coach Lew Hill believes Otchere\u2019s defensive prowess will\u00a0be\u00a0an excellent fit for the team.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>He\u2019s a rim protector. He gives you athleticism he gives you experience. In his conference one year he was defensive player of the year. He just anchors the back of that press, we never had anyone like that back there that can\u00a0intimidate\u00a0you.\u00a0Plus, he rebound, he runs, and he is physical, so we are excited. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Otchere was also being recruited\u00a0by \u201cpower-five\u201d schools like Auburn and Arizona State according to reports. Yet, as coach Hill explains, landing Otchere is not only a big step for UTRGV but also for the Western Athletic Conference. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>In order to catch New Mexico State and stay at the top of this conference, which is potentially getting better every year, you got to get players that you don\u2019t supposed to get sometimes. So that says from where the program was when I got here to\u00a0where\u00a0it is today. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Additionally,\u00a0coach Hill said that the key to landing Otchere, was the prior existing relationship\u00a0they had with Otchere. This relationship\u00a0began\u00a0when Otchere was transferring from Garden City Community College to Division I\u00a0back\u00a0in 2018.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>We recruited him out of junior college, so we knew about him already.
