University of Texas System Chancellor James Milliken visited UTRGV\u2019s Edinburg campus earlier today to observe how in-person classes are operating amid the COVID-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milliken said while he walked around campus, he was impressed by how well students are complying with UTRGV\u2019s safety procedures.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI\u2019m very impressed that when I walked across campus when I went to today\u2019s payment day, I walked by the bursar\u2019s window, I saw a lot of students there,” he said. “Everybody was in a mask, everybody was physically distant, everybody was taking responsibility for each other.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

Milliken also took note of the 2,100 COVID-19 tests UTRGV conducts in a day, and how beneficial that is for campus and surrounding communities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communication Patrick Gonzales said UTRGV only has 5% of physical classes for the fall semester.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Milliken says UTRGV is prepared to move fully online if COVID-19 cases begin to rise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“So, if we decided that because of a number of positive cases, we want to reduce that even further,” Milliken said. “They could reduce that and eliminate it and move to an online environment.”<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n

During his visit, <\/strong>Milliken discussed UTRGV\u2019s two priorities with president Guy Bailey, which are \u201cthe health and safety of the community and keeping students on track to graduate.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
