Classes, meetings, game nights and even dances are using Zoom to connect people &#8212; virtually.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s the idea of UTRGV University Recreation\u2019s (UREC) Zoombathon, a modern solution to hosting their annual breast cancer awareness Zumba event and complying with COVID-19 social distancing regulation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Starting at 9:30 a.m on Saturday, participants will log in through Zoom for an hour of exercise with UREC instructors. UREC Fitness and Wellness Coordinator Fay Kennan said no one needs experience to join.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cJust come in and have a good time,&#8221; Kennan said. &#8220;What we tell people is make sure you have some space in\u00a0your house or wherever you\u2019re at.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Kennan said that there have been hours of planning of choreography and music choices for the event and encourages everyone to attend.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe really want the entire public, the entire UTRGV community to join us and check it out because it\u2019s going to be fun,\u201d she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Kennan, events like Zoombathon are preventive measures that UREC takes to spread breast cancer awareness.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAt some point or another, we\u2019re affected by it and if we just spread more awareness, then we can take those preventative measures to catch it early and live longer, healthier lives,\u201d Kennan said,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Exercise Sciences graduate Pamela Lin said that breast cancer awareness is more than just month-long and the event is an opportunity for people to learn more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe should take the time now since it is a designated month and a designated event to be open to this information and to really appreciate that these opportunities are being given,\u201d Lin said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Lin adds that the information could be useful if someone you know may begin to have concerns.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cAt least you\u2019ll have this primary information to provide to them and essentially you could end up saving their lives or prolonging it with this information,\u201d she said,<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Kennan said participants have the opportunity to win prizes and merchandise.
