{"id":3075,"date":"2020-11-16T13:33:01","date_gmt":"2020-11-16T19:33:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=3075"},"modified":"2020-11-16T13:33:04","modified_gmt":"2020-11-16T19:33:04","slug":"a-look-into-the-2020-2021-utrgv-womens-basketball-team","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2020\/11\/16\/a-look-into-the-2020-2021-utrgv-womens-basketball-team\/","title":{"rendered":"A look into the 2020 -2021 UTRGV women\u2019s basketball team"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"576\" src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Fieldhouse-Court-1040-1024x576.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-2989\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Fieldhouse-Court-1040-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Fieldhouse-Court-1040-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Fieldhouse-Court-1040-768x432.jpg 768w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/Fieldhouse-Court-1040.jpg 1040w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>COURTEY PHOTO\/UTRGV ATHLETICS<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/WBasketball1116.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The 2020-2021 UTRGV women\u2019s basketball season is only 10 days away as they open up on the road against Texas Tech on Nov. 25 after eight months off the hardwood.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In an offseason that has been marked by the COVID-19 pandemic which has led to <a href=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2020\/08\/31\/a-safe-return-for-utrgv-student-athletes\/\"><strong>many changes<\/strong><\/a> in how the team operated over the summer, the entire program counts down the days to game day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior point guard Amara Graham shares her excitement for a safe return to the court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWith all the [COVID-19] stuff, it was so much uncertainty not knowing whether we would have a season, how the season would go but now that the schedule is out, we\u2019re [10] days away I think it\u2019s very exciting right now,&#8221; Graham said. &#8220;The jitters are coming, it\u2019s even just more fun to know we got a BIG12 opponent our first game. That\u2019s big for us. It\u2019s just getting very exciting.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Practicing and playing collegiate basketball is no small feat in the middle of a global pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>However, women\u2019s basketball alongside the rest of the athletics department must follow NCAA and UTRGV COVID-19 guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For UTRGV women\u2019s basketball COVID-19 protocols include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Wearing face coverings that cover mouth and nose and practicing proper social distancing when not participating in practices or competitions;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Undergoing daily temperature checks;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Frequent sanitization of high traffic such as the weight room, training room and victory center and;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; COVID-19 testing will be conducted a minimum of three times per week throughout the season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Although other UTRGV Athletics programs have had <a href=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2020\/10\/13\/utrgv-athletics-confirms-positive-covid-19-cases\/\"><strong>positive tests<\/strong><\/a> of COVID-19, UTRGV women\u2019s basketball, according to head coach Lane Lord, has not reported a positive test as of Nov. 6 and will continue to \u201cknock on wood\u201d and follow protocol to keep it that way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cSo, definitely an adjustment period for all of us but I tell you what, our players have been just unbelievable since they\u2019ve been back,&#8221; Lord said. &#8220;They\u2019ve followed all the university protocols, they been staying safe and we\u2019ve been able to have about 48 practices up to this point with the whole team, without losing anybody at this point and that\u2019s because they\u2019ve done such a good job following the athletic protocols\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Graham added that the team understands that following the protocol set by the NCAA and the university is the only way to have a season.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also said that not producing a positive COVID-19 test result allows the team to develop on-court chemistry with new players to the program.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The team\u2019s six new players are a mix of incoming freshmen,&nbsp; transfers students from JUCO programs and a DI transfer:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Freshman guard Arianna Sturdivant from George Bush High School in Richmond, Texas;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Freshman forward Brianna Sanchez from Edinburg High School;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Junior transfer forward Jessica Martino from Labette Community College;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Sophomore transfer guard Jena\u2019 Williams from The University of Nevada, pending her eligibility status to play in the upcoming 2020-2021 season, according to Lord;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Junior transfer guard Jordan Lewis from Grayson College and;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Junior transfer Afiya Vincent from Colby Community College.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Coach Lord explained that the transfers bring a lot of athleticism to the line-up but highlighted the two freshmen, Sturdivant and Sanchez..<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe have two freshman that we\u2019re really excited about too and Amara can attest to this, I think Amara is the best shooter in our league, she\u2019s led the WAC two year in a row in three-point shooting percentage, we have a freshman Ariana [Sturdivant] that can really shoot the basketball and we\u2019re excited about the future that she can have here at UTRGV,&#8221; Lord said. &#8220;We have a local product in Brianna Sanchez that\u2026 she\u2019s 6\u20192, you watch her in the Valley in high school and we thought she had the opportunity to help us down the road, but I think she can help us this year too. Provide depth in the post with [Burcu Soysal] and [Sydney Cajero] but been very, very impressed with Brianna.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>This year\u2019s team will not be returning six players to the program due to transferring and graduation and 10 players have returned for another season with UTRGV women\u2019s basketball<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Transfer players include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Mia Paz transferred to Southwestern University;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Trelynn Tyler transferred to Prairie View A&amp;M University and;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Ashlei Lopez transferred to Arkansa Tech in Division II;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Spring 2020 graduates:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; Jordan Agustus;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Zhane Templeton and;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Megan Johnson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>10 players have returned for another season with UTRGV women\u2019s basketball:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Senior guard Amara Graham;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Senior forward Iva Belosevic;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Senior guard Valeria Tapia;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Freshman guard Payton Hicks;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Junior center Burcu Soysal;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Freshman guard Mallory Gibson;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Sophomore guard Tiffaney McGarity;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Sophomore guard Halie Jones;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Sophomore forward Sydney Cajero and;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8211;Sophomore guard Sara Bershers.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Yet the departure and additions in the program are not only amongst the players but the coaching staff as well.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Former UTRGV associate head coach Anna Nimz is now the head coach at Northwestern State University in the Southland Conference and former assistant coach Blake Huber is now the assistant coach at Arkansas Tech in Division II.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Graham explains that although she understands the moves are a casualty of the business of basketball, she is proud of both Nimz and Huber on their new opportunities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI mean, I was pretty hurt about it,&#8221; Graham said. &#8220;I&#8217;m sure a lot of my teammates were too, about Coach Nimz and coach Blake [Huber] leaving us but at the same time we have to understand that this is all a business and they\u2019re leaving to better themselves and\u2026 Coach Nimz is a DI coach now, you know, it\u2019s better opportunities for them so at the end of the day we just have to understand that we still keep the same relationships that we had with them, whether they are here or not.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>The new additions to the coaching staff include associate head coach <a href=\"https:\/\/goutrgv.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/coaches\/kevin-hackerott\/2638\"><strong>Kevin Hackerott<\/strong><\/a> and assistant coach <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/goutrgv.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/roster\/coaches\/keanna-keys\/2639\">Keanna Keys<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Lord says both Hackerott and Keys have adjusted well to the Rio Grande Valley and are expected to add a lot of experience to the program as they look to content for a WAC championship and earn strong victories in their <a href=\"https:\/\/goutrgv.com\/sports\/womens-basketball\/schedule\"><strong>non-conference schedule<\/strong><\/a> that includes:\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; @ Texas Tech on Nov. 25;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; @ UTSA on Nov. 30;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; vs. Texas A&amp;M Corpus Christi on Dec. 2 at Bert Ogden Arena;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; @ Texas Southern on Dec. 5;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; @ Texas A&amp;M Corpus Christi on Dec. 8;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; @ Kansas on Dec. 14;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; vs. Prairie View A&amp;M on Dec. 18 at South Padre Island as a part of the South Padre Island Classic;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; vs. UT Arlington on Dec. 19 at South Padre Island as a part of the South Padre Island Classic and;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8212; vs. Incarnate Word on Dec. 21&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite facing two BIG12 schools, some things never change for Graham as she explains that the rivalry with Texas A&amp;M Corpus Christi runs deep and is more exciting to face the Islanders than both Texas Tech and Kansas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cI think the most exciting one for me is going to be the Corpus game,&#8221; Graham said. &#8220;Just \u2018cause of the history we have with them every year and where we are going to play it at.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For coach Lord, the Kansas Jayhawks is the matchup he is most looking forward to as he returns to his old stomping grounds of Kansas where he coached for&nbsp; ___ years before coming to UTRGV in 2018.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cYou guys know I\u2019m from Kansas, Coach Hackerott is from Kansas, [Coach] Ipek played in Kansas, I coached her there in Kansas so we have a lot of ties in Kansas and we\u2019ll have [a] big crowd following UTRGV,&#8221; Lord said. &#8220;That\u2019s the game\u2026 the coach there [at Kansas] I\u2019ve known [for] a long, long time we coached against each other nine years in MIMIA Division II.
