Justin Elizalde\/VAQUERO RADIO<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/Surge0125_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">COVID-19 cases are rising for a second time across the Rio Grande Valley since the first surge this past summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to the Texas Department of State Health Services\u2019 (DSHS) COVID-19 dashboard as of Friday, 28% of the Valley\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/txdshs.maps.arcgis.com\/apps\/opsdashboard\/index.html#\/0d8bdf9be927459d9cb11b9eaef6101f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>hospitalizations<\/strong><\/a> were COVID-19 patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Cameron County Health Authority Dr. James Castillo says the rise was already being seen after the Thanksgiving holiday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWhen you had a lot of virus circulating around the time of all those gatherings it just really caused the number of infections to start going up at a very rapid pace,\u201d Castillo says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>DSHS Region 11 Medical Director Dr. Emilie Prot says the difference between the first surge to now is more treatment options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe have more therapeutics so we do have different options for people,\u201d Prot says.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Doctor Prot says the therapeutic offered is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.regeneron.com\/sites\/default\/files\/treatment-covid19-eua-fact-sheet-for-patient.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Regeneron<\/a>, a monoclonal antibody treatment for patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 symptoms given at infusion centers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Castillo says the state assisted in opening the infusion centers and are just one step to help patients.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe\u2019ve already treated more than 600 people in an effort to take some pressure off the hospitals,\u201d he says. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>He says the infusions being used now are something that hasn\u2019t been available during the summer spike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chief Nursing Officer for Harlingen Medical Center Amy Flores says her hospital is preparing for a second surge but worries about space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe issue you will see across the Valley is room,&#8221; Flores says. &#8220;When we have a lot of patients that need to be admitted, at some point, eventually you run out of space. \u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Flores says the hospital does have plans in place to address any spacing issues after learning from the first surge in the summer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She also urges people to continue to practice social distancing, wearing masks, and minimize gatherings to curb the spread of the virus.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vaquero Radio attempted to contact Hidalgo County Health Authority Dr. Iv\u00e1n Mel\u00e9ndez but we did not hear back.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We also attempted to contact UTHealth RGV Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael Dobbs and Dean of UTRGV School Of Medicine Dr. John Krouse but they were unavailable to speak.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Vaquero News, I\u2019m<strong> Justin Elizalde<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>COVID-19 cases are rising for a second time across the Rio Grande Valley since the first surge this<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":13,"featured_media":3471,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[13,16,6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-3462","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-brownsville","category-edinburg","category-radio"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
