COURTESY PHOTO\/UTRGV ATHLETICS<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s Basketball (8-4, 2-0)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Saturday night 75-77 defeat vs. Texas Southern in Houston<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vaqueros lost in heartbreaking fashion on a last second tip in by Chris Baldwin of Texas Southern in their first action in two weeks after multiple <a href=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/05\/utrgv-mens-basketball-on-the-road-to-face-texas-southern-tigers\/\">cancelations<\/a> due to COVID-19.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Off the bench junior guard LaQuan Butler led the Vaquero in scoring with 15 points. Senior guard Javon Levi filled up the stat sheet with 10-6-7 and moved into 9th place in WAC history for assists with 565 surpassing Petie Gibson (560) and Tim Hardaway Sr. (563).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Women\u2019s Basketball (4-7, 0-2)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Saturday afternoon defeat 55-77 vs. Grand Canyon University in Phoenix<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vaqueros had a rough first day in the desert as the Antelopes forced 26 turnovers and scored 27 points as a direct result.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior guard Amara Graham led all UTRGV scorers with 13 points shooting 4-11 from the field and 2-6 from deep to go along with four rebounds and a team high four assists.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sunday noon defeat 73-83 vs. Grand Canyon University in Phoenix<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vaquero held a 39-33 lead at halftime, but the Antelopes came roaring out of the break with a 30-point third quarter and didn\u2019t surrender the lead for the rest of the game.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Senior guard Amara Graham once again led all UTRGV scores with 21 points in 39 minutes of play.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s Soccer (1-0, 1-0)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Saturday night 1-0 victory vs. Seattle U in Seattle&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Looking for <a href=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/02\/utrgv-mens-soccer-kicking-back-into-season\/\">respect<\/a>, the Vaqueros were able to pull off the upset on the road versus the College Soccer <a href=\"https:\/\/collegesoccernews.com\/college-soccer-news-spring-2021-preseason-top-30-mens-college-soccer-national-poll\/\">News<\/a> Preseason No. 15 nationally-ranked Redhawks with a Renan Dos Santos goal in the 38th minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The victory also marks a first win for Bryheem Hancock as the Head Coach of the Vaquero after he took over the roll back on Nov. 24, 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Women\u2019s Soccer (2-0)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Wednesday night 2-1 victory vs. Texas A&amp;M Corpus Christi in Corpus Christi<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite the <a href=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2021\/02\/03\/its-our-team-dna-utrgv-womens-soccer-ready-for-odds-stacked-season-opener\/\">many odds<\/a> they faced coming into their season-opener, UTRGV freshman forward Anna Frida Groedem recorded her first career and the game-winning goal in the 95th minute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sophomore midfielder Anna Torslov was able to find the back of the net for the Vaqueros in the 24th minute.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sunday afternoon 1-0 victory vs. Incarnate Word in San Antonio&nbsp;<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite being outshot in the game 6-16 and 4-7 on goal Vaquero\u2019s senior midfielder Gina Steiner converted the lone goal of the game with an early PK in the eighth minute.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Junior goalkeeper Maile Lunardi kept a clean sheet with six saves and helped the Vaqueros improve to 3-1-1 all time record against the Cardinals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Men\u2019s Tennis (3-2)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Friday afternoon 1-6 defeat vs. Lamar University in Beaumont<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vaquero lost in their doubles matches, 3-6 and 4-6 and fell behind early to the Cardinals. The team put up a strong effort in their singles matches but came up short on court one, four, two and three.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The lone victory of the day came on court five where senior Mateo Schmit rallied after dropping the first set and won 10-6 in the third set.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Saturday morning 5-2 victory vs. Texas Lutheran University in Seguin, Texas<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vaqueros had a dominant day out on the courts sweeping the opposition with their only two losses coming by default, three matches went unfinished after UTRGV clinched the win.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Luka Jankovic, Te Kani Williams and Mateo Schmit all picked up victories in singles and doubles-pairs Luka Jankovic and Zane Kohrs and Carlo Izurieta and Mateo Schmit swept with scores of 8-0.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Women\u2019s Tennis (0-4)<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Saturday morning 1-6 defeat vs. Stephen F. Austin in San Marcos, Texas<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vaqueros fell in their first road match of the season. The lone victory of the day came on court six as sophomore Sandra Putz earned her first win of the season in a 10-8 third set against Ai Noa Fabre.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Sunday morning 0-7 defeat vs. Texas State in San Marcos<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The Vaquero were swept by the Bobcats on the road and now have fallen to 0-4 to start the season. This is the first time this season the team has been swept.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In doubles, sophomores Sandra Putz and Katarina Sasaroga recorded the lone victory of the match for UTRGV, 6-3 on court three.
