The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley Department of Intercollegiate Athletics announced<\/a> <\/strong>that the men’s soccer season home opener against Grand Canyon University has been canceled in a news release Wednesday afternoon.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the news release, the cancelation was promoted after a Tier I member of the Grand Canyon University men\u2019s soccer program tested positive for COVID-19. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Tier I member, according<\/a> <\/strong>to the NCAA, consists of student-athletes, coaches, athletic trainers and physical therapists, medical staff, equipment staff and officials.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the news release, UTRGV is exploring opportunities to schedule a match this weekend.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last home match for the Vaqueros at the UTRGV Soccer and Track & Field Complex was on Nov. 3, 2019 in a 0-1<\/strong><\/a> loss to eventual 2019 WAC Champions Seattle U.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The next scheduled match for the Vaqueros is scheduled for 2 p.m. Feb. 20 on the road against California Baptist University. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the moment, UTRGV will have a month-long wait for their season home opener when they host the University of Nevada, Las Vegas at noon on March 13. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Games against California Baptist University are not scheduled to be made up unless both programs have a common week off in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
