PAUL CHOUY\/UTRGV MARKETING AND<\/span> <span class=\"has-inline-color has-cyan-bluish-gray-color\">COMMUNICATIONS<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/3rd-Dose_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The Pfizer vaccine currently requires two doses, but according to an<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/cvshealth.com\/news-and-insights\/articles\/cvs-health-live-the-race-to-vaccinate\">interview<\/a><\/strong> with CVS Health on April 15, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla says people will likely need a third dose after six to 12 months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The CEO added that there would be annual vaccinations but nothing has been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Regional Medical for the Texas Department of State Health Services Director Dr. Emilie Prot acknowledges the recent claim made by Pfizer that a third dose or booster might be required and says that it will not be very different from the current dosage of vaccinations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cGetting vaccinated has helped decrease a lot of our hospitalizations and we saw that early on,&#8221; Prot said. &#8220;I don\u2019t have any specific answers \u2026 to say \u2018yes it\u2019s going to be a third dose,\u2019 but how is that going to happen, well, just like any other booster shot.\u201d <\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Prot, there are more than 2,400,600 active cases of COVID-19 in Texas, including over 240,000 cases in areas within region 11, which covers Cameron, Hidalgo, Willacy and Starr counties.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Prot said that the cases emphasize the importance of individuals receiving the correct amount of doses, so that vaccinations can be effective.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe\u2019ve had people that have only gotten one dose and have gotten exposed between their first and second dose so we do have to make sure that people understand that you have to be fully vaccinated,&#8221; she said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at UT Health RGV Dr. Michael Dobbs adds his thoughts on a third Pfizer vaccine dose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cThe thinking is that the booster will enhance your immune response that you already have from the first two doses as it begins to wear off,&#8221; Dobbs said. &#8220;It\u2019s not really a surprise that the COVID vaccine is going to require boosters, we just didn\u2019t know for sure and had to wait to find out.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Dobbs also said since a third dose has not been required, UTRGV has yet to put any plans of distribution into motion.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\"><p>\u201cWe don\u2019t have any word on when we might receive it and through what mechanism we might be able to receive it,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information on the vaccine and where they are being offered, visit the UTHealth RGV <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/uthealthrgv.org\/health-care-news\/coronavirus\/vaccine\/\">website<\/a>.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pfizer vaccine currently requires two doses, but according to an interview with CVS Health on April 15,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":15,"featured_media":4316,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[6],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-4313","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-radio"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
