Photo by Will Bennett \/ Vaquero Radio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/booster-1018_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">UT Health Rio Grande Valley is now offering a third dose of Pfizer&#8217;s COVID-19 vaccine to UTRGV students, staff and faculty who meet certain prerequisites.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This booster shot is meant to extend the effect of the initial two doses, with eligible recipients being determined via Center for Disease Control guidelines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to an email from UTRGV Announcements, for someone to be eligible for a booster shot from UT Health RGV they must meet any of the following criteria:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f27508\">\u00b7\u00a0 Age 65 years or older and received a second Pfizer shot at least six months ago.                        \u00b7\u00a0 Age 12 or older and moderately to severely immunocompromised and who received a second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine at least 28 days ago.                                                          \u00b7\u00a0 Age 18-64 with an underlying medical condition and who received second Pfizer shot\u00a0 at least six months ago.                                                                                                                                                                                                                                \u00b7  Age 18 and up with feelings of being at risk for severe COVID-19 due to institutional or occupational exposure (at least six months after receiving a second Pfizer shot).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Unless immunocompromised most criteria require that you received the Pfizer vaccine for the first two doses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice Dean for Clinical Affairs and Chief Medical Officer at UT Health RGV Michael Dobbs explains the benefits of receiving a booster shot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f27508\">\u201cIt appears that the immune response that your body makes from the vaccine to be able to fight off the virus if exposed to it, diminishes over time,\u201d  Dobbs said. \u201cThe third shot is offered as a way to boost up that immunity again to, one hopes, the point that you\u2019d be able to effectively fight off virus if exposed to it. It\u2019s really not much different than the people need to get a periodic measles vaccine as an example, in order to maintain your long-term immunity.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Freshman English major Renato Chavez believes vaccination is a necessary step to getting the pandemic under control.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Asked how he feels about booster shots Chavez said <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f27508\">\u201cI\u2019m not opposed to it, I\u2019m gonna get it when it\u2019s my time to get it\u2026 I think if you\u2019ve gotten the first two doses, I think you should get the booster.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Junior Biology major Grecia Espinoza, believes vaccines are valuable and should be taken even if they don\u2019t eliminate the virus or chance of infection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-white-color has-text-color has-background\" style=\"background-color:#f27508\">\u201cIts actually gonna help you, it\u2019s not gonna make you immune to the virus itself but its gonna help you out,&nbsp; just in case you get the virus it\u2019s not gonna be as bad.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information on COVID-19 vaccines and booster shots visit<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/\"> cdc.gov<\/a> or uthealthrgv.org.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>This is Will Bennett with Vaquero Radio.<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>UT Health Rio Grande Valley is now offering a third dose of Pfizer&#8217;s COVID-19 vaccine to UTRGV students,<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":16,"featured_media":4579,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[16,6],"tags":[110,109,72,48,68,111,112,26,108],"class_list":["post-4576","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-edinburg","category-radio","tag-booster","tag-boosters","tag-covid","tag-covid-19","tag-edinburg","tag-health","tag-rgv","tag-utrgv","tag-vaccines"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
