Photo by Rodolfo Alvarado \/ Vaquero Radio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The UTRGV Athletics Department announced its plans to construct the Lew Hill Memorial Plaza as part of the $30-million renovations to enhance sports facilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UTRGV Vice President and Director of Athletics Chasse Conque, Men\u2019s Basketball Head Coach Matt Figger and Renee Hill, widow of Lew Hill, made the announcement last Wednesday outside the UTRGV Fieldhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Renee Hill said the memorial means a lot to her and her family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThis means more than just the monument or just the name,\u201d she said. \u201cIt means all of the student-athletes and people that will come here will feel [his] presence.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Lew Hill was the former head coach for the UTRGV Men\u2019s Basketball team until he suddenly died on Feb. 7, 2021, at the age of 55.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The memorial plaza will be located outside the UTRGV Fieldhouse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Figger said he still feels Lew Hill\u2019s presence in the office.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cEvery time I walk into this office, walk into that gym, his presence is felt in a positive way,\u201d he said. \u201cHe always stood for peace and love. \u2026 We\u2019re moving forward to continue to honor his memory here and celebrate the man he was, the husband that he was and the coach that he is.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Conque said UTRGV wanted to honor Lew Hill in a meaningful way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cIt\u2019s the whole campus community, the leadership, very supportive finding a special way to honor coach,\u201d he said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Conque, the university hopes for construction to begin in the spring or summer of next year and is expected to finish in 2025.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is Rodolfo Alvarado for Vaquero Radio.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The UTRGV Athletics Department announced its plans to construct the Lew Hill Memorial Plaza as part of the<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":14,"featured_media":4952,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[21,32,16,6,14],"tags":[103,28,460,458,68,461,459,462,44,463,46,451,26],"class_list":["post-4951","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-basketball","category-breaking-news","category-edinburg","category-radio","category-sports","tag-103","tag-basketball","tag-construct","tag-constructive","tag-edinburg","tag-hill","tag-lew","tag-memorial","tag-news","tag-plaza","tag-sports","tag-summer","tag-utrgv"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
