{"id":5020,"date":"2022-09-12T15:20:58","date_gmt":"2022-09-12T20:20:58","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=5020"},"modified":"2022-09-12T15:20:59","modified_gmt":"2022-09-12T20:20:59","slug":"childhood-obesity-awareness-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2022\/09\/12\/childhood-obesity-awareness-month\/","title":{"rendered":"Childhood Obesity Awareness Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"1024\" src=\"http:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ChildhoodObesity-91-0_VaqueroRadio_SilvanaVillarreal-1-1024x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5023\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ChildhoodObesity-91-0_VaqueroRadio_SilvanaVillarreal-1-1024x1024.png 1024w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ChildhoodObesity-91-0_VaqueroRadio_SilvanaVillarreal-1-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ChildhoodObesity-91-0_VaqueroRadio_SilvanaVillarreal-1-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ChildhoodObesity-91-0_VaqueroRadio_SilvanaVillarreal-1-768x768.png 768w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ChildhoodObesity-91-0_VaqueroRadio_SilvanaVillarreal-1-666x666.png 666w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ChildhoodObesity-91-0_VaqueroRadio_SilvanaVillarreal-1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption>Photo by Silvana Villarreal \/ Vaquero Radio<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"http:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/ChildhoodObesityAwerenessMonth_SilvanavVillarreal_VaqueroRadio_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The month of September is nationally recognized as Childhood Obesity Awareness Month and across the country, obesity has been an underlying issue among children for some time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to bring light to the issue of overweight children because \u201cit is a major public concern,\u201d says part time lecturer from the Department of Health and Biomedical Science and former registered dietitian, Laura Jimenez-Garza.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cIt&#8217;s a nationwide issue, but in Texas alone you are looking at about 20% of out youth ages 10 to 17 are obese,\u201d says Garza.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Different factors contribute to childhood obesity, from diet to exercise to food security.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThere is also an increase in TV watching, and increase in soda consumption, even skipping meals,\u201d\u00a0\u00a0said Garza.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Garza states that obesity can lead to chronic diseases later in life, such as heart disease, Type 2 diabetes, joint pain and high blood pressure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends obtaining adequate sleeping times, staying active and limiting high calorie temptations, as a way to help children maintain a healthy weight.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Garza also commented on how the COVID-19&nbsp;&nbsp;pandemic impacted families nutrition wise.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThe BMI [body mass index] in children has increased, children between the ages of 2 and 19 has increased during this pandemic period, [more] than the pre-pandemic.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>However, the Texas and federal government have made various programs and infographics available for children and their families to help with food insecurity according to Garza.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThe government did a great job with the \u2018Keep Kids Fed Act\u2019 during the summer to keep summer programs rolling even though this pandemic period because we know that a lot of children still didn\u2019t have access to meals in the summer,\u201d said Garza.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Garza says it is important to have the support from family, and community.
