The start of February marks the beginning of Black History Month. Program Coordinator for Cultural Change Raul Leal tells us more about what Black History Month means to him.<\/b><\/p>\n

“Well to me, it’s really about the history of not necessarily my history, but it\u2019s important for our students within the black community to really feel that they have a space here on campus and an understanding that we, as faculty and staff members, appreciate the diversity on campus.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

While coordinators like Mr. Leal are listening to students about what events they want to see on campus, Junior Marketing student, Yaw Sam explains what the significance of Black History Month is, and what it means to students as a whole.<\/p>\n

“Black history is more than a month, it’s about the culture and the representation of people of color in this country and I believe that it is a time in which we can come together and you know just think about what we’ve been through and how we are still going through and how to address them.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Different events across UTRGV will be taking place in celebration of Black History Month. Mr. Leal tells us more.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, colorism is our first event and that will be again hosted on Thursday night here at the university center first floor lobby. We have a movie \u201cMoonlight\u201d which will be happening February 19 which will be at the Union at 7 p.m.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Mr. Leal tells us that it’s important to understand that black history is not just a month, but it is something that we live through our lives daily.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
