{"id":5235,"date":"2022-10-31T15:08:39","date_gmt":"2022-10-31T21:08:39","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=5235"},"modified":"2022-11-02T10:41:30","modified_gmt":"2022-11-02T16:41:30","slug":"new-committee-to-discuss-tenaska-fund","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2022\/10\/31\/new-committee-to-discuss-tenaska-fund\/","title":{"rendered":"New committee to discuss Tenaska fund\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"730\" src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PUBcut1031_OL2-1024x730.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5236\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PUBcut1031_OL2-1024x730.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PUBcut1031_OL2-300x214.jpg 300w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PUBcut1031_OL2-768x548.jpg 768w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/PUBcut1031_OL2.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><figcaption><em>Photo <em>Courtesy&nbsp;<\/em> The Rider <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/10\/Tenaska10311_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Silvana Villarreal<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">On Oct. 24, the Brownsville Public Utilities Board (PUB) members discussed initiatives on how the $29 million funds should be returned to the community, but no final decision was made.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cYou can start by giving that money back, and we\u2019re not gonna stop before you guys pay the rest of the money back,\u201d said local Brownsville resident Keila Taboada, after the meeting opened with public comment period.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cPeople that are in service by PUB, they can\u2019t handle it anymore with the bills,\u201d said resident John Shergold about people having to decide on how to spend their money, the high utility bills or things such as medicine.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BPUB director of finance Miguel Perez brought solutions to the board suggesting the use of the Tenaska Fund money towards the Bill Reduction Program.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThe easiest way for us\u2026 is through the Bill Reduction Program,\u201d said Perez. \u201cSo that everybody shares equally, based on their usage\u2026&nbsp;&nbsp;That&#8217;s how it was collected and that&#8217;s the easiest way to give it back.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>BPUB&nbsp;&nbsp;Vice Chair Patric Sampayo said the community should be consulted through mediums such as town meetings and workshops before making any decisions on the funds.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWhat we\u2019ve heard from the community, is that we should do a better job at listening first,\u201d said Sampayo.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mayor Trey Mendez said the overwhelming sentiment from the public is wanting the money back and not taking action only delays the matter further.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cHow much time, what percentages, is for us to decide,\u201d said Mendez on the logistics of handling the money.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The board unanimously passed a resolution, motioned by BPUB board member Arthur &#8220;Art&#8221; Rendon, to create a committee and move forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It is set to discuss how the money should be further handled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The committee will be made up of Trey Mendez,&nbsp;Commissioner, District 3&nbsp;Roy De los Santos and&nbsp;Commissioner, District 4&nbsp;Pedro Cardenas and three PUB board members, also including Mendez.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Silvana Villarreal On Oct. 24, the Brownsville Public Utilities Board (PUB) members discussed initiatives on how the $29<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":21,"featured_media":5236,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[32,13,34],"tags":[103,27,41,44,26],"class_list":["post-5235","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-breaking-news","category-brownsville","category-entertainment","tag-103","tag-brownsville","tag-fall","tag-news","tag-utrgv"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
