{"id":6896,"date":"2024-03-25T11:10:28","date_gmt":"2024-03-25T17:10:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=6896"},"modified":"2024-03-25T11:10:29","modified_gmt":"2024-03-25T17:10:29","slug":"the-darkest-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2024\/03\/25\/the-darkest-day\/","title":{"rendered":"The darkest day"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Pete Mendoza<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"992\" src=\"http:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Eclipse-final-1024x992.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-6897\" srcset=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Eclipse-final-1024x992.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Eclipse-final-300x291.jpg 300w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Eclipse-final-768x744.jpg 768w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Eclipse-final-1536x1489.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Eclipse-final.jpg 1625w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/03\/Eclipse-for-real-final_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The \u201cGreat American Eclipse\u201d is going to fly over North America and bring complete darkness in its path April 8, crossing Mexico, the United States and Canada.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>UTRGV Assistant Professor at the Department of Physics and Astronomy Juan Madrid explains an eclipse is the alignment of the Earth, sun and moon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWell, what we\u2019re going to have in a couple of weeks here in Texas is what we call a total solar eclipse and that\u2019s when the moon is going to block most of the light that comes from the sun,\u201d Madrid said. \u201cSo in that case, what we\u2019re going to have is total darkness in the middle of the day.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the most recent eclipse in the United States was in 2017 and after this next eclipse, the U.S. will not see another one until 2045.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Madrid said people enjoy the event because of the eclipse\u2019s beauty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cIt is still relevant today because it\u2019s a very beautiful, natural phenomenon,\u201d he said. \u201cYou can even see the brightest stars in the sky, but you also see the outer layers of the sun that you usually don\u2019t see.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Madrid said there are a few locations in Texas that will experience the path of totality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p> \u201cIt\u2019s going to cross the border by Eagle Pass,\u201d he said. \u201cIt\u2019s going to continue through San Antonio, Austin, Dallas and then that path is going to continue north through Ohio and Maine.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He said in Brownsville and McAllen the moon will block out 88% of the sun\u2019s light.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added the entire process of the eclipse will take several hours in which those who want to watch the development must use special eclipse glasses to prevent damage to eyes.
