{"id":8177,"date":"2025-12-02T15:03:57","date_gmt":"2025-12-02T21:03:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=8177"},"modified":"2025-12-02T15:04:04","modified_gmt":"2025-12-02T21:04:04","slug":"a-gift-of-life-by-the-american-medical-student-association","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2025\/12\/02\/a-gift-of-life-by-the-american-medical-student-association\/","title":{"rendered":"A \u2018gift of life\u2019 by the American Medical Student Association"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Gift-of-lifeFULL-_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The American Medical Student Association at UTRGV hosted a Gift of Life drive that brought an international blood stem cell and marrow registry Nov. 18 to the Edinburg campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The event invited students to learn about the donation process, swab on site and take the first step toward becoming potential life-saving donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>President of the American Medical Student Association and biology senior Karen Alanis said the purpose behind the event was to find donors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWhat this aims at doing is finding donors to help save people that have different types of blood cancers, such as leukemias and lymphomas and things like that,\u201d Alanis said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She said increasing participation among younger donors is essential since a match can mean the difference between life and death.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>AMSA Vice President, biology and medical humanities junior, Rida Shareef said matching is rare.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u00a0\u201cFor patients from minority communities, their odds are even lower due to underrepresentation in the registry. But by hosting this drive at UTRGV, we\u2019re giving our students the opportunity to change those odds,\u201d Shareef said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Alanis and Shareef both said representation matters, especially in regions with large Hispanic populations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Oscar Cazares, a graduate student in the master of Science and Criminal Justice accelerated online program.
