{"id":8350,"date":"2026-02-09T10:12:46","date_gmt":"2026-02-09T16:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=8350"},"modified":"2026-02-09T10:13:53","modified_gmt":"2026-02-09T16:13:53","slug":"workshops-help-undergraduates-unlock-research-funding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2026\/02\/09\/workshops-help-undergraduates-unlock-research-funding\/","title":{"rendered":"Workshops Help Undergraduates Unlock Research Funding\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/undergraduated0209_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The Office of Engaged scholarship and learning hosts several workshops throughout the year intended to help students apply for funding opportunities and make their dreams and long term goals come true.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Engaged Scholarship and Learning Program Manager Robert Longoria said the workshop is intended to give students the opportunity to receive awards between $2,000 to $4,000 every academic semester.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Longoria said research isn\u2019t something students need to wait until after graduation to pursue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIf you\u2019re interested in building your career, you don&#8217;t have to wait, you can start today,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The program manager said research opportunities are available across a wide range of disciplines, from Biomedical sciences to creative works and community engagement, allowing students to explore projects that match their interests.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to Longoria, one of the biggest challenges students face is working through the application process, especially if they have never applied before.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThat\u2019s kind of why we hold the workshop. Our office is actually here to help any students that have never done this before, &#8221; he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Longoria added that funded research gives students hands-on experiences that can be a stepping stone to graduate school or a professional career.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Biomedical Science Junior Dylan Jimenez said he decided to apply to the engaged scholarship program after struggling to find research opportunities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cI applied for the engaged scholarship award and luckily I got it, and so now I do research with a professor and I\u2019m able to do what I originally wanted to do,\u201d he said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Jimenez said he has learned it is very important to persevere and not give up when things are going sideways and added there are different ways to do something you really want to do.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Jimenez said he thinks programs like this are important for students who may not feel connected to campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIt not only provides them an opportunity to receive funding for something they\u2019re passionate about, but to get them more involved,\u201d Jimenez said.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><br>For more information, visit\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/utrgv.edu\/engaged\/\">utrgv.edu\/engaged\/<\/a> or call them at 665-3461 for Edinburg and 882-4300 for Brownsville.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Office of Engaged scholarship and learning hosts several workshops throughout the year intended to help students apply<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":41,"featured_media":8351,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[569,13,16,696,831],"tags":[27,68,194,42,26],"class_list":["post-8350","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-academic","category-brownsville","category-edinburg","category-education","category-on-campus","tag-brownsville","tag-edinburg","tag-spring","tag-students","tag-utrgv"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
