{"id":8524,"date":"2026-03-30T10:59:11","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T16:59:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=8524"},"modified":"2026-03-30T10:59:11","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T16:59:11","slug":"utrgvs-big-effort-for-autism-acceptance-month","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2026\/03\/30\/utrgvs-big-effort-for-autism-acceptance-month\/","title":{"rendered":"UTRGV\u2019s Big Effort for Autism Acceptance Month"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/03\/AutismAcceptance_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">Student Accessibility Services (SAS) and the Counseling Center at UTRGV are supporting students year round but in April their focus is to create a welcoming classroom and campus environment for students on the spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>SAS Access Coordinator Rebecca Monroe said the department&#8217;s goal is to connect students with the support they need.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monroe said for students on the autism spectrum, support goes beyond simply recognizing autism and explained that acceptance can look like normalizing behaviors often misunderstood in classrooms.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIf somebody uses fidgets so that they can concentrate, then we need to normalize that. That&#8217;s acceptance.\u201d Monroe said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She said many traditional classroom expectations don\u2019t always support neurodiverse students. Simple adjustments such as allowing headphones, movement or avoiding forced eye contact can make a difference.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Monroe said one of the easiest ways to support students is also the most direct.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cAll you have to do is, what can I do to help you?,\u201d Monroe said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Student accessibility services are also creating spaces for connection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cWe\u2019re going to have an autism acceptance awareness event. It&#8217;s going to be very calm, sensory friendly,\u201d Monroe said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>UTRGV Counseling Center Case Manager Diana Landeros said their office is involved in ongoing efforts to support students. One of those efforts is a support group created through a statewide wellness initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cThis all started from a project focused on student wellness and each university had to choose a population of focus,\u201d Landeros said. \u201cHere at UTRGV, we chose students with autism.\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Landeros said the group was developed after listening to student experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The group provides a welcoming and flexible environment for students who identify as being neurodiverse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>She said it is a safe space where students can feel free to talk and interact with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Landeros said the program also focuses on navigating the social and emotional aspects of college life.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIt focuses on skill building, self advocacy, really understanding what it\u2019s like to be on the spectrum,\u201d Landeros said.\u00a0<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Mary &amp; Frank Yturria Elementary School, Life Skills Special Education Teacher Lilia Sanchez said in an email to Vaquero Radio she views advocacy as a core responsibility, she added students on the spectrum often see and interact with their surroundings in unique ways.&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanchez said her mission is to provide the skills students need to navigate diverse environments successfully.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The special education teacher said she believes the right classroom supports are the foundation for lifelong achievement; the school provides&nbsp; a comprehensive suite of services including occupational therapy (OT), speech language pathology and physical therapy (PT).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sanchez said there is a need to cultivate highly structured, inclusive environments where students feel secure and valued.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Students can call the Student Accessibility Services at 956-882-7374 or the Counseling Center at 956-882 3897 for Brownsville and 956-665-2574 for Edinburg.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is Emilio Suarez for Vaquero Radio<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Student Accessibility Services (SAS) and the Counseling Center at UTRGV are supporting students year round but in April<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":41,"featured_media":8526,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[13],"tags":[27,68,42,26],"class_list":["post-8524","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-brownsville","tag-brownsville","tag-edinburg","tag-students","tag-utrgv"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
