{"id":8618,"date":"2026-04-27T10:50:57","date_gmt":"2026-04-27T16:50:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=8618"},"modified":"2026-04-27T10:50:57","modified_gmt":"2026-04-27T16:50:57","slug":"mental-health-guidance-for-the-vaqueros","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/27\/mental-health-guidance-for-the-vaqueros\/","title":{"rendered":"Mental Health Guidance for the Vaqueros"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/counselingFINALL0427PT2.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">The university Counseling Center offers different services year-round depending on students&#8217; mental health needs.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The center provides different confidential services such as individual counseling, couples counseling and group counseling.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clinical therapist for the Counseling Center Bianca Esquivel said she encourages early intervention such as having a counseling session as soon as the first warning sign shows up. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cTo make sure that we\u2019re avoiding burnout and that we\u2019re avoiding, you know, if experience lots of suicide, that we kind of address that and manage it together,\u201d\u00a0 Esquivel said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She said anxiety and depression are the most common reasons students go to the counseling center.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cAnd usually related to, like, academic stress, but recently relationship related stress too. And a lot of the times, maybe stuff that has nothing to do with academic stress as well, like family life,\u201d Esquivel said.\u00a0 \u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>She said before an official session students have to complete a 20-minute screening assessment. &nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cSo students&#8217; first appointment is actually called a screening,\u201d Esquivel said. \u201cIt\u2019s about a 20 minute interview just to see if they\u2019re eligible for services, and at the end of those 20 minutes we\u2019ll give them some recommendations, right, on which services might be most helpful.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Esquivel shared a situation showing the impact of her service which was when she was able to help a student from a financial constraint.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cSo with this particular student , she really went out of her way to tap in all the resources that she had,\u201d she said. \u201c So she was always very consistent with our sessions and she was very open about how she was feeling.\u201d \u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Director of the Counseling Center Christopher Albert said the center is working to implement a new initiative called the Frontline project.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Albert said the Frontline project trains faculty, staff and students to serve as peer counselors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThey can recognize that a student is struggling and then talk with them,\u201d he said. \u201cThey\u2019re more likely to be in a position of already having that trust type of relationship with a student.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Students interested in visiting the Counseling Center can call 956 665-2574 for Edinburg and 956 882-3897 for Brownsville.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is Celeste Cruz for Vaquero Radio.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The university Counseling Center offers different services year-round depending on students&#8217; mental health needs.&nbsp; The center provides different<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":37,"featured_media":8619,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[13,16,692,831],"tags":[27,68,194,42,26],"class_list":["post-8618","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-brownsville","category-edinburg","category-health","category-on-campus","tag-brownsville","tag-edinburg","tag-spring","tag-students","tag-utrgv"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
