{"id":8624,"date":"2026-04-29T08:32:12","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T14:32:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=8624"},"modified":"2026-04-29T08:32:13","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T14:32:13","slug":"utrgv-legal-education-hub-aims-to-expand-access-build-pathway-to-law-careers-for-rgv","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/29\/utrgv-legal-education-hub-aims-to-expand-access-build-pathway-to-law-careers-for-rgv\/","title":{"rendered":"UTRGV Legal Education Hub Aims to Expand Access, Build Pathway to Law Careers for RGV"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/04\/LEGAL0427_mixdown.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap\">A partnership with St. Mary\u2019s School of law expects to keep more graduates rooted in South Texas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Vice President for University Marketing and Communications Patrick Gonzalez said the partnership with St. Mary\u2019s School of Law expands access to legal education in the Rio Grande Valley.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gonzales said the partnership will bring online JD and MLS programs into a local learning environment at UTRGV with dedicated classrooms, study space, technology and onsite report.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He said the goal goes beyond academics.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cWe want to create more opportunity for valley residents, for UTRGV students to help stay rooted in this region and strengthen the local workforce over time,\u201d Gonzales said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Students who are accepted into St. Mary\u2019s online law program may be guaranteed spots in designated Rio Grande Valley Cohorts, a move Gonzales said helps address long standing barriers in education.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gonzales explained that while students must still meet all academic requirements, the pathway is designed to make entry into law school more obtainable for students.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added the idea was proposed by State Representative Armando Martinez, who himself completed St. Mary\u2019s fully online JD program while living in the Valley.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Gonzales said the impact could be significant for the region\u2019s legal workforce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThe region has talented students who\u2019ve wanted to pursue careers in law,\u201d Gonzales said. \u201cBut the access is always a barrier, often students have had to leave the Rio Grande Valley for legal education and then when they leave, many of them don\u2019t return.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>He added that both JD and MLS programs can open doors to positions in law firms, district attorney offices and other legal settings across South Texas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>School of Political Science, Public Affairs, Legal and Security Studies Director Dongkyu Kim said the new legal education hub opens a critical opportunity for students who might not be able to leave the valley.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cIt is a door, very narrow door, just opened up for RGV students,\u201d Kim said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kim said that while many students leave South Texas to pursue law degrees, this new legal education hub will be great opportunity for students who cannot leave&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He added people who go to other cities to pursue legal education often don\u2019t come back which contributes to what he called a \u201clegal desert\u201d in the RGV, where the demand for attorneys exceeds the supply.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p>\u201cThey\u2019re looking for a lawyer, but just cannot find [one], so this will definitely help the Rio Grande Valley,\u201d Kim said.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Kim said his advice to UTRGV students is to broaden their academic experiences.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For more information call the College of Liberal Arts at (956) 882-7818 for Brownsville and (956) 665 &#8211; 3551 for Edinburg.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;This is Emilio Suarez for Vaquero Radio.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A partnership with St. Mary\u2019s School of law expects to keep more graduates rooted in South Texas.&nbsp; Vice<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":41,"featured_media":8626,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"cybocfi_hide_featured_image":"","footnotes":""},"categories":[13,696],"tags":[27,42,26],"class_list":["post-8624","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-brownsville","category-education","tag-brownsville","tag-students","tag-utrgv"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.4 -
