{"id":8681,"date":"2026-09-02T09:34:16","date_gmt":"2026-09-02T15:34:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/?p=8681"},"modified":"2026-09-02T13:55:03","modified_gmt":"2026-09-02T19:55:03","slug":"extreme-heat-puts-utrgv-students-in-uncomfortable-situations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/index.php\/2026\/09\/02\/extreme-heat-puts-utrgv-students-in-uncomfortable-situations\/","title":{"rendered":"Extreme Heat puts UTRGV Students in Uncomfortable Situations.\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<figure class=\"wp-block-audio\"><audio controls src=\"https:\/\/utrgvradio.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/08\/HEAT0831.mp3\"><\/audio><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-drop-cap wp-block-paragraph\">With high temperatures across the valley, UTRGV health officials remind students to be more cautious in recognizing the warning signs of heat-related illnesses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Student Health Center Registered Nurse Priscilla Benavides said students should recognize the warning signs and take action before symptoms become more serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cHeat stroke, which can be [a] life-threatening, medical emergency and potentially fatal as well,\u201d Benavides said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benavides said heat exhaustion can cause dehydration, heavy sweating, dizziness, headache, nausea, weakness, fatigue and thirst.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students who begin feeling dizzy, weak or nauseous should stop physical activity and move to a cool or shaded area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cSit or lay down to prevent injury,\u201d Benavides said, \u201cRaising of your lower extremities can also help with improving blood circulation.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Students can use air-conditioned buildings, water fountains and water refill stations across campus to stay cool and hydrated.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Benavides said campus police officers also can help students find resources during an emergency.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She said she recommends students to drink fluids with electrolytes, lightweight and loose-fitting clothing and avoid certain drinks because they contribute to dehydration.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cLimiting alcohol and avoiding excessive caffeine would be smart because they do contribute to dehydration,\u201d Benavides said.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">She added students who exercise outdoors should avoid the hottest part of the day and recommended the morning or evenings for activities such as running or cardio.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Director of Environmental Health Safety and Risk Management (EHSRM) Matthew Moncus said heat exhaustion is the most common heat-related condition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moncus said people who experience heat exhaustion may sweat heavily, feel tired or dizzy and have trouble to maintain their balance. He added their skin may also feel cool and clammy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cIt\u2019s the first stages of dehydration,\u201d Moncus said. \u201cBut what it can do is cause your brain to start overheating.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said the heat stroke is more serious and occurs when the body\u2019s core temperature rises above 104 degrees.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-pullquote\"><blockquote><p><strong>\u201cYour brain stops working properly,\u201d Moncus said. \u201cYou\u2019re no longer sweating, your skin turns very hot, red and this is a potentially life-threatening condition.\u201d<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Moncus said EHSRM provides heat safety training for faculty and staff.
