After last Tuesday’s statewide elections, the city of Edinburg will have a runoff election for City Council Member place three.
Edinburg City Attorney, Omar Ochoa explained to UTRGV Radio that the Texas Constitution requires a municipality official with a term of at least two years, to win with a majority vote.
A majority vote means that the winning candidate must get a “50 percent plus one” vote.
Ochoa explains what happens when no candidate get majority vote.
“So, in this specific case there were four people running for that place three spot, and none of them were able to get over the 50% plus one requirement. So, in those instances, the top two to vote getters enter into this runoff.”
According to the Hidalgo county website, the top two are Juan Garcia with 32.59% and Deanna Dominguez 34.67%
Garcia says that speaking to the city manager would be the first thing he would do as an elected official.
“I think the city manager is one of the first people that I need to sit down with and see what their future goals and what their overview is of our city and of our employees.”
Dominguez says that after block walking, she saw the resident’s response to the construction on the streets, and that would be one of her first doings as elected official.
“Well I definitely want to continue with the infrastructure projects that are going on. After knocking on the doors, the people on the east side of town are so grateful.”
Early voting for the runoff election is scheduled to be November 25 to December 6 and election day is scheduled to be on December 10th.
