UTRGV men’s basketball fell to Grand Canyon University 87 to 79 on Thursday night despite 15 points and 13 assists from junior point guard Javon Levi. The lopes of Grand Canyon shot the ball over 58% from the field and 60% from the 3-point line, their best marks all season. After the game head coach Lew Hill, summed up his team’s defensive performance against Grand Canyon.
We played with a lot of effort tonight, it’s one thing we have really been focusing on is effort and getting the ball inside so those 3 pointers would start going in.
This sentiment was also shared by point guard Javon Levi who also talks about UTRGV’s lack of defense in the loss to Grand Canyon.
Well we got 8 days to get ready for the longhorns so we got a lot of improving to do but hopefully we will continue to do a better job taking care of the basketball. We still had 16 turnovers way to many but all in all we are getting better each game.
Coach Hill promises that his team will be prepared and focused on the defensive end for their Saturday night matchup against CSU Bakersfield.
I mean it is exciting, last year they came here and that was the biggest game of our season, you know crowd wise, and it was actually a really good game. So I think we can just use last year and how fired up that game was and use that as momentum going into the game. I mean we got to go up there, but we still need to come out with the same intensity and bring it.
The next matchup for UTRGV Men’s Basketball will be on the road against Kansas City on Thursday February 6th at 7pm as UTRGV will start the second half of western athletic conference play. For more updates and highlights visit goutrgv.com.
