UTRGV’s campus carry laws state a strict policy in which only license holders may carry a concealed handgun. However, if need be, students may carry self-defense weapons. UTRGV Chief of police Chief Munguia explains what it means to hold a concealed handgun.
In that law, the gun has to be concealed, which means that you cannot be wearing clothing that is tight enough to wear you can see the imprint of it, and… If so then you are in violation of the law and will be arrested.
Munguia says that a student can carry stun guns or small pepper spray bottles, as long as they use it appropriately.
UTRGV Sophomore, Laiza Gracia explains how she would feel knowing somebody has a weapon.
For example, if it is a gun, I don’t think I would feel to safe, but if it just pepper spray, or like taser, or anything like that, that’s fine with me. As long as they aren’t using it in a way it’s not supposed to be used, then its fine.
Gracia says she carries a pepper spray at all times because it makes her feel safer when walking around campus.
UTRGV’s website has safety tips that include to walk in groups, be aware of your surroundings, and in you feel threatened cross the street to enter a store or business.
