Unlike past years, UTRGV Housing and Residence Life will have contactless drive-thru move-in days for students who will be living on campus in the fall.

Starting Saturday, the department will only receive students who scheduled an appointment to move in.

Director of Housing and Residence Life, Sergio Martinez, says the department will have appointments from Saturday through August 22.

We actually sent out instructions to all of our residents, on our move-in page, on our website. So, you log in there and then you just kinda pick, you put in your information, you pick the date and time, and then you’ll get a confirmation email, and then we’ll remind you as we get closer.

According to Martinez, the department is expecting about five hundred and sixty students to live on campus.

So, you drive up, we’d give you the forms to sign. We’ll be wearing masks and social distancing, and we’ll ask everyone in the vehicle to wear a mask. And then we’re also limiting in a number of helpers that can bring with them. So, we’re asking for only two adults to arrive with the student to help them move in.

According to an email sent to Vaquero Radio, Martinez says Housing and Residence Life is not requiring students to self-quarantine as part of the move-in process.

He also says the department will not require residents to have regular COVID-19 testing.

Biology junior Natalie Moreno is going to be her third year living on campus and says she is nervous to move back because of roommates.

You can never really keep track of what other people do, but I know that I just have to trust them that they will take proper precautions just as I will.

Martinez says Housing and Residence Life reduced the number of occupants in the study and conference rooms and limited the in-person interactions with staff.

We’ll still be available, but our primary preference will be to meet virtually and of course, if it warrants it, you know, we need to meet in person, we can also arrange for that.

Martinez wants to remind students that everyone has a responsibility to take care of each other and safety is number one priority to be successful during the pandemic.
