University of Texas System Chancellor James Milliken visited UTRGV’s Edinburg campus earlier today to observe how in-person classes are operating amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Milliken said while he walked around campus, he was impressed by how well students are complying with UTRGV’s safety procedures.
“I’m very impressed that when I walked across campus when I went to today’s payment day, I walked by the bursar’s window, I saw a lot of students there,” he said. “Everybody was in a mask, everybody was physically distant, everybody was taking responsibility for each other.”
Milliken also took note of the 2,100 COVID-19 tests UTRGV conducts in a day, and how beneficial that is for campus and surrounding communities.
Associate Vice President for Marketing and Communication Patrick Gonzales said UTRGV only has 5% of physical classes for the fall semester.
Milliken says UTRGV is prepared to move fully online if COVID-19 cases begin to rise.
“So, if we decided that because of a number of positive cases, we want to reduce that even further,” Milliken said. “They could reduce that and eliminate it and move to an online environment.”
During his visit, Milliken discussed UTRGV’s two priorities with president Guy Bailey, which are “the health and safety of the community and keeping students on track to graduate.”
