“Just a big, big heartfelt thank you for everything he’s done, and we will miss you.”
That’s the message UTRGV President Guy Bailey has for Dr. John Krouse who will be stepping down as executive vice president of Health Affairs and dean of the School of Medicine in 2021.
According to an email sent to the campus community by the Office of the President, Dr. Krouse will step down from his administrative posts at the end of August 2021 to join the faculty in the UTRGV School of Medicine.
Dr. Krouse says he accomplished what he had set out to do and is ready to move on to the next stage of his career.
“So, for the new academic year in September 2021, I’ll have been here four years at that time and over that course of four years. … I think coming here, I had clear goals of what I wanted to do, have been very satisfied with that and I have built a team and an infrastructure that will allow the school and the division to move forward positively.”
According to Dr. Krouse, he will be a professor in the department of surgery in the School of Medicine with the title of dean emeritus. [a mer i tus]
“So, I look forward to coming back, working with students, working as a mentor to young faculty. I’m certainly looking forward to helping the new leadership when they take office next fall.”
According to Bailey, he will appoint a search committee mid-October to search for the next successor of Dr. Krouse.
“We’re looking for someone who has a lot of experience. Who has a broad understanding of both medical education and clinical operations, those are the main things.”
Bailey aims to hire the next successor by the summer of 2021.
According to the UTRGV School of Medicine’s website, Dr. Krouse took the position as dean on July 2017.
He came “from Temple University in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, where he served as the senior associate dean for clinical affairs; president of Temple University Physicians; professor and chairman of the Department of Otolaryngology—Head and Neck Surgery; and director of the Head and Neck Institute at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine.”
Dr. Krouse says the most memorable accomplishment at UTRGV is the first graduating class from the School of Medicine in May.
“That by far was the most heartwarming and an important thing that we’ve accomplished. And that’s what we’re here for, we’re here to create new physicians that will move into the community and take care of the patients that need the care. So very proud and very pleased when that event occurred.”
