Elon Musk will donate millions of dollars to Cameron County schools and the City of Brownsville, according to a tweet this morning from the SpaceX CEO.
Musk’s tweet states that $20 million will be donated to the schools and $10 million to the revitalization of downtown Brownsville.
“Details to follow next week,” the tweet added.
The City of Brownsville replied to Musk’s announcement via social media.
“Grateful for your support in making #Brownsville a launching pad to Mars,” the City of Brownsville stated. “We look forward to continuing to work with @elonmusk and @SpaceX!”
Musk tweeted again later, encouraging his followers to consider moving to Starbase, Brownsville or South Padre Island.
“SpaceX’s hiring needs for engineers, technicians, builders & essential support personnel of all kinds are growing rapidly,” he tweeted. “Starbase will grow by several thousand people over the next year or two.”
Musk first announced his plans to create the city of Starbase, Texas on March 2 via Twitter.
Cameron County Judge Eddie Treviño Jr. said in a news release the same day that SpaceX officially approached the county regarding Musk’s interest in incorporating Boca Chica Village into Starbase.
“If SpaceX and Elon Musk would like to pursue down this path, they must abide by all state incorporation statutes,” Treviño said in the news release. “Cameron County will process any appropriate petitions in conformity with applicable law.”
