On Sept. 21, The City Commision of Brownsville signed an official Proclamation that acknowledged UTRGV for its contributions to Astronomy and designated the week of Oct. 4 – 10 as “Space Week”.

According to the World Space Week website, the week is to celebrate the advances in science and technology that have helped the betterment of the human condition.

Brownsville celebrated their Space Week by issuing a proclamation highlighting the research and contributions that UTRGV has made in astronomy.

Brownsville City Commissioner Roy De Los Santos says that this proclamation is part of an effort to build a new space museum.

“It’s something good for the community as a whole, but especially the children. It’s about inspiring the future generations to look to math, sciences, [and] space as possible career fields and fields of study.”

Director of the Center for Gravitational Wave Astronomy at UTRGV Mario Diaz says that this recognition allows the community to see their efforts on the research they conduct.

“It’s important to see…the whole community is embracing what we’re doing here. They feel it’s theirs and rightly so.”

Diaz shared his feelings of encouragement upon receiving word of the city’s actions.

“When the city…and mayor recognized this, I think this is a good reason for all of us to feel proud of the services the university provides the community and the region.”
