Student Activities threw a Vaqueros Block Party last Thursday on the Edinburg campus and will host a similar event from noon to 2 p.m. on the library lawn on the Brownsville campus.
Assistant Director for Student Activities Cristina Rodriguez said the Brownsville Block Party was originally scheduled last Wednesday, but had to be rescheduled due to the cold weather.
“We looked at the weather forecast that justly was our factor as to why we wanted to reschedule,” Rodriguez said.
Rodriguez said there were many interactive games and activities for students on the Edinburg campus that will be available for the Brownsville campus, such as inflatables, obstacle courses, ax throwing, soccer darts and much more.
“We have hot dogs, chips and drinks and everything,” she said. “We work with Chartwells. We work with Pepsi. We have s’mores. S’mores are great for the weather.”
Rodriguez said the event aims to get students engaged with one another and meet different university resources.
Biology junior Anna Vela said she liked the interactiveness of the event.
“So, you’re not just doing one thing,” Vela said. “You’re not just in one place. You’re seeing everyone, you’re doing different things and you’re talking to all the people at the organizations.”
Rodriguez said seven to 12 student organizations are in charge of certain games and activities giving attendees a chance to learn about different clubs on campus.
University Recreation Intramural official Jonathan Armenta said UREC had games for students to be recreational.
“We’re just having some fun games so they can be recreational for the people, for the students, so they can have fun,” Armenta said. “It’s fun to see all the students getting involved.”
