As of Jan. 6, the Student Health Services Clinic in Brownsville has moved from Texas Southmost College’s Cortez Hall to a new location closer to campus, making it more convenient for students.
Director of Health Services Glenn Gray said the new site for the clinic will be in the Research Office Building between the Biomedical Science Building and Casa Bella Apartments.
The Student Health Services Clinic is also located at 613 North Sugar Road in Edinburg, next to the University Recreation Center.
“We moved to the Research Office Building, which is where our permanent home is eventually gonna be,” Gray said. “And we’re working on a marketing campaign to get the word out [to all] the students as to where it is.”
He said the reason the clinic moved was because of a lease agreement that ended between Texas Southmost College (TSC) and the university.
“The lease agreements with the TSC facilities have been expiring, and we’ve been moving out of them and moving to new facilities as they become available and our deadline [to get] out of . . . Cortez Hall, which is [a] TSC facility, was over the break,” Gray said.
UTRGV alum Vanessa Garcia said she was never aware of the UTRGV clinic.
“I wasn’t aware, but if I [was], I would have gone to the clinic when I would feel sick,” Garcia said. “The clinic [should use] social media, flyers and brochures to spread the word [about] their services and location to UTRGV students.”
UTRGV student Karen Rivero said she found it unclear what services are provided by the clinic.
“I think that there should be more information about what services they provide or something about when we can [make] an appointment,” Rivero said. “One time, I fell down and like my knees were all scraped and then I didn’t know, like, there was a clinic [in Edinburg].”
Gray said the clinic provides numerous services to help keep students healthy.
“We have all the vaccinations, the immunizations, you may need,” he said. “We have a walk-in clinic for general colds and flu. Any illnesses you may have or any minor injuries you may have on campus. We also have provided women’s services on a regular basis with female providers.”
