Students participate in Lunar New Year activities at the Edinburg University Center Diego Montano/ Vaquero Radio
The Lunar New Year celebration took place Tuesday, Feb. 10, 2026, from 12:30 to 2 p.m. at the Edinburg University Ballroom.
The event featured traditions, food, games, arts and crafts representing various Asian cultures.
The celebration was hosted by the Center for Student Involvement.
Students had the opportunity to meet organizations and professors who help represent these cultures on campus.
One of the interactive stations included a wishing tree and fortune booth, where attendees could write down their hopes for the new year.
Aleecia Smith, a junior majoring in early care and childhood education who hosted the wishing tree and fortune booth, said many students participated in the activity.
“A lot of people have been able to come and write down their wishes for like the New Year or their resolutions,” Smith said.
Throughout the event, students gathered to enjoy traditional dishes and watch special performances while learning more about Asian cultures.
Desire Luna, junior psychology major, said the atmosphere stood out to her.
“My experience here at this event has been really nice. The food is really good, and seeing the amount of people come in and celebrate together is really nice,” Luna said.
Freshman finance major Rachel said she enjoyed both the cultural learning experience and the activities offered.
“It was a really good experience to learn more about the Asian culture and the food was great. A little bit cold, but it was great,” Rachel said.
Organizers say events like this aim to create a welcoming space for students to experience different traditions and celebrate cultural diversity on campus.
