Tomorrow UTRGV’s Women’s Volleyball will be playing their first home game of the 2019 season against Texas A&M Corpus Christi in the South Texas showdown. One of the captains for UTRGV is local athlete Jackie Kingsbury who was a highly decorated high school player coming out of Los Fresnos High School. Kingsbury credits her high school success to her high school coach, Becky Woods.
“I really think it was my team that helped me but how would I have done it by myself. So I mean coach was great coach, she still is coaching she is a great coach, she really helped us understand, how we can all shine together.”
Kingsbury committed to UTRGV in 2017 and explained why she decided to ultimately stay in the Rio Grande Valley and play for UTRGV.
“First of all coming to school here and it’s so close to home but yet a little far from home so, I still get to experience different things. Playing for UTRGV is really awesome because i get a lot of people from home that want to come watch the games and it just, I feel like it takes volleyball to a different standard.”
In her junior season with UTRGV, Kinsbury is one of 3 captains alongside teammates, Barbara Silva and Debora Nazario, and explains what it mean to be captain.
“I would like to think, we are all equal, so I mean we are just different things that we do that the girls don’t, so I mean we just talk to the coaches more about certain things and or if the coaches have stuff to tell the girls they go through us and so. Everyone is a leader in their own way, which happen to be the communication.”
The UTRGV Women’s Volleyball teams next game will be tomorrow at 7pm at the UTRGV Field house as they will host the Islanders of Texas A&M Corpus Christi. Later in the week on Friday September 20th and S Saturday September 21st UTRGV will be hosting Houston Baptist, Texas State, and Washington State in the UTRGV tournament at the Field House.
