After UTRGV Women’s Basketball dropped their 2019 – 2020 season home opener 77 to 44. UTRGV Head Coach Lane Lord wanted to start a new against Minot State University saying,
“I’ll tell you the number one thing we are going to do is throw the film in the trash and we are going to start over. We got some soul searching to do that was about as bad as basketball I feel bad for the Valley, I feel embarrassed for players, but its really all my fault we’ll clean it up and we will be much better.”
And better they were. as UTRGV took down the Beavers of Minot State University 75 to 56 on Saturday at the UTRGV Fieldhouse. UTRGV Freshman guard Halie Jones lead UTRGV in scoring with 15 points. A performance that impressed Coach Lord.
“I tell you who impresses me and continues to impress me is Halie Jones the freshman from Wichita here is her stat line, 6 for 10, 3 for 5 from three she had 15 points 2 assists 1 turnover not bad for a freshman.”
After the game, Jones tells the media what has been key to her early collegiate success in only her freshman season.
“I come from a high school where I was the main scorer, so I come here and you know I am a freshman so I got to know my role, but if my teammates need me to shoot the ball you know its selfish if I’m open and I don’t shoot it so I got help the team out any way I can.”
UTRGV Women’s Basketball next game will be this Tuesday November 12th at the UTRGV Fieldhouse at 7 p.m. against Texas Lutheran University. For more updates and highlights visit goutrgv.com.
