UTRGV Women’s Basketball defeated the Lopes of Grand Canyon University 66 to 47 on senior day as Zhane Templeton, Desirea Buerge and Megan Johnson played their final home game. UTRGV was clicking on all cylinders as they held a 42 to 22 lead over GCU. Postgame UTRGV Head Coach Lane Lord talks about the first half performance.
We played one of our best first halves of the year both on both ends. Offensively, really shared the basketball, made open shots, did a great job. Defensively, I mean, I thought we were going to hold them to 12 points there in first half and they made a little run at the end of the half. We played great on both sides of the ball.
Despite the halftime lead Coach Lord says that the recent 3 game winning streak for UTRGV has been because of the effort the team put on the glass getting rebounds.
If you go up and down the list, Desirea, Megan, Sara, even Tre had some rebounds today, but 52 rebounds is awesome man. That’s 3 games in a row we won the rebound war and what’s our record.
In the final home game for Johnson and Burgee they finished with 10 points and 15 points respectfully. Templeton did not play due to injury. Yet Coach Lord says that the senior’s impact on the team and the program will go beyond the court.
Make great grades and then they also are great people and they are good players, so it’s a great example for our younger players. With having a lot of younger players on how to act, how to carry yourself, how to go to class, do the right things, treat people in a certain way, and then they do that so I’m real proud of them.
The final game of the season for UTRGV Women’s Basketball will be on the road against the Lancers of California Baptist University Saturday March 7th at 3 pm. For more updates and highlights visit GOUTRGV.com.
