Megan Johnson has been a staple of UTRGV Women’s Basketball over the last 4 years. Now in her final season with UTRGV Johnson is averaging 6.2 points and 5 rebounds per game. Yet, Johnson originally got her start in Netball, a sport similar to basketball. However, thanks to a childhood friend Johnson was introduced to basketball and has been hooked ever since.
My best friend back home her older sister was an Olympian for Australia and they were such a heavy basketball family and I was playing a different sport called netball in Australia, which I don’t think America has, but it is kinda similar and they were just like hey come play basketball one time and I tried it and I just loved it.
Being from originally Newcastle, Australia when picking a college and relocating to the other side of the world, Johnson said the decision to attend UTRGV was an easy one.
People talked to me a lot about the family environment down here, you know, as you said being so far away from my family that was something that I wanted to be around. You know, not just to be another number at a school, I wanted to be looked after and cared for as like a 17, 18-year-old girl living on the other side of the world and I definitely got that here.
As Johnson’s senior season comes to an end Johnson takes time to reflect on her time here at UTRGV and impact and legacy she wanted to leave behind.
I just really wanted to be a leader for the younger girls, I think for all girls really. I just wanted to go out and, I’m not the sort of person that likes to tell people what to do, I like to lead by example and just work hard and hopefully the other girls will follow in my footprints.
After basketball Johnson plans to continue her academic career as she looks to a apply to medical school to become a surgeon. For more updates and highlights visit GOUTRGV.com.
