Mens’ Soccer at UTRGV is almost at its halfway mark on the season. The Vaquero’s kicked off their 2021 season on August 26th against the University of Central Arkansas. Since then, the Vaquero’s have moved to 5-3 on the season so far and are 1-0 in conference play.
Vaquero Radio sat down with Men’s Soccer Head Coach Bryheem Hancock ahead of Thursday’s game.
In regards to the fall season so far, coach Hancock had this to say.
“It’s been very good in the fact of getting information for what things we need to continue to work on with the group. What things we do really well as a group, and now obviously we’re navigating through conference play.”
With a win over California Baptist University on Sunday, Men’s Soccer is now 2-0 in conference play.
Many of the Vaquero’s games have been decided by a score of 1 point. Coach Hancock had this to say about the close matches.
“No, I think the majority of games we’ve scored more than one goal. Which, in soccer, is one of the hardest things to do. To score multiple goals in a match.”
“I think defensively it’s been the biggest thing. Obviously we got our first shutout last weekend. And that’s something we focus in on after non-conference play. To get a shut-out obviously is a reward for the work the guys have put in defensively.”
Before getting a win this past Sunday over Cal Baptist, who are 6-2-2 on the season, coach Hancock had this to say about going into the match against the Lancer’s.
“A team now that can qualify for the conference tournament. A team that did really well in the league in the springtime, would’ve been in the conference tournament if they were eligible last spring. So we expect two very hard matches.
The Vaquero’s have a match this Friday, October 8th against the US Air Force Academy. The game will be held in Cadet Soccer Stadium in Air Force Academy, CO 7 p.m. The game can be streamed through the WAC Digital Network or ESPN+.
