Republican candidate Celeste Cabrera-Huff is focusing her campaign for Texas House District 40 on property tax relief, affordable health care and better-paying jobs in the Rio Grande Valley.
Celeste Cabrera-Huff is challenging incumbent Democratic state Rep. Terry Canales in the Nov. 3 general election.
Republican Candidate for House District 40 Celeste Cabrera-Huff said affordability remains the biggest concern for Hidalgo County residents.
Cabrera-Huff said her campaign focuses on lowering property taxes, expanding access to affordable health care and creating better-paying jobs.
“I believe the number one issue is gonna be affordability, ” Cabrera-Huff said.
Cabrera-Huff proposed changing how property appraisal values are adjusted to reduce the financial burden on homeowners every five years, using a sliding scale of 1% to 3%.
She said the proposal would help families keep more money and remain in their homes. Cabrera-Huff also addressed concerns about higher education and employment opportunities or UTRGV students.
She said the Valley needs stronger partnerships with businesses and additional investments to encourage graduates to remain in the region.
“Our students deserve to have an opportunity to stay here and to have a family here,”Cabrera-Huff said.
She added expanding career pathways, developing local businesses and providing more resources could help graduates build their futures in the Valley.
Cabrera-Huff also emphasized the importance of listening to college students when developing policies that affect their education and careers.
She said she encouraged young voters to become involved in local and state politics.
“Your voice does matter, Your vote matters, you decide who goes in that office,” Cabrera-Huff said.
Cabrera-Huff said she wants to bring changes to District 40 after 14 years of representation under Canales.
