Advisor of La Unión Chicana de Hijxs de Aztlán Samantha Lopez said the drive is about feeding the cats that are in the Department of Education Quad on the Edinburg Campus.
Lopez said the idea to start this drive came from previous LUCHA members who wanted to help cats during colder months.
“It was getting cold and we noticed the cats out there kind of huddled together,” Lopez said.
LUCHA President Jesus Quiroz said the organization continues to help out the cats roaming the UTRGV Edinburg campus.
“We continuously look out for them and make sure that they’re okay, they’re safe,” Quiroz said.
LUCHA Secretary Lexus Lopez said students who want to contribute can donate sealed cat food.
“We would like to have more donations so the cats have food throughout the year and throughout the next semester as well, hopefully,” Lopez said.
Although the drive is intended to help campus cats survive, LUCHA advisor Samantha Lopez said students should understand that while the current cats are loved and cared for, the university does not accept abandoned pets.
Lopez said the current cats have been here for many years.
She added, recently the campus community mourned the loss of one cat named Olivia who lived on campus for 15 years.
“A lot of students were sharing their stories about how she brought them a lot of joy and that they would pet her for good luck before an exam,” Lopez said.
Quiroz said it is about coming together as a community, not just about the cats but also about one another.
Students who are interested in donating can drop-off at the Puentes Office in the Education Complex at 1.506 on the Edinburg campus.
