UTRGV introduces all-female Mariachi Azalea

UTRGV’s Mariachi Azalea performed at the UTRGV Ballet Folklorico Alegria this past weekend. The group officially became a part of UTRGV in the summer of 2018.

Violinist and singer of Mariachi Azalea, Giselle Sanchez tells us more about the group.

[su_quote]“Mariachi Azalea is something that was brought up by Dr. Dahlia Guerra and in the past years there was a girl group, and this year we wanted to bring, or actually last year we wanted to bring up an all-female group to show off that girls can do what the male dominant mariachi group can.”

Sanchez says many female newbies from high-school were taking an interest in mariachi. Mariachi Juvenil Azatlán violinist and singer Adela Flemming, tells us what inspired her to take on mariachi.

[su_quote]“I have always been in orchestra, I play the violin and entering my freshman year of high school I joined the program at Nikki Rowe High School in McAllen. Ever since then I fell in love with Mariachi music and that’s how I found out about UTRGV’s Mariachi and I had a dream of joining them, and it finally happened and I am really excited.”
