Last week, the Career Center at UTRGV celebrated the National Student Employment Week. The UTRGV website states that the celebration is meant to “recognize and appreciate” the importance of student-employees for their “outstanding performance and contributions”.

The celebration started on Monday through a kick-off party in which they announce all the events of the week such as virtual Loteria, virtual workshops, career conversations, and many more activities conducted online.

Student Employment Coordinator for UTRGV, Sandra Mireles says these events are how UTRGV celebrates the hard work of student-employees.

We also choose to participate because it is a national event and through this event is how we can celebrate and appreciate all the student’s for their hard work and their dedication to UTRGV.

Mireles says these events are done on a yearly basis, in the month of April, and this is the 5th year the Career Center is hosting these events.

The Career Center finalized the week announcing the winners of both Supervisor and Student-employee of the year.

The winners for the Edinburg Campus are Constantine Tarawneh and William Reckley and for the Brownsville Campus, they are Ruth Torres and Sandra Masso.

Sociology Junior and Student Career Advisor, Noel Rangel says that this week pushes students to do better.

You know this week I think pushes students to do better, the appreciation of the supervisors I think is a very positive… something positive to look forward in the week.

Mireles says there are more than twenty-five hundred students working for URGV and those applying in the summer, will be required to be enrolled for at least 6 credit hours, for the whole summer.

Mireles explained that are encouraging students to find a job on campus because it is more convenient.

We encourage students to find a job on campus, and on campus it’s because that way is convenient for them, they are already coming to school on campus, they might as either have a job on campus, is more convenient.
