UTRGV extended the payment deadline for Thursday due to a high volume of students that needed assistance.

The extension was announced on Aug. 18 through UTRGV’s social media accounts.

Senior Vice-President for Strategic Enrollment and Student Affairs Maggie Hinojosa said one of the other reasons there was an extension is due to an issue with one of the UTRGV’s third-party systems in handling the cash grants.

“What started happening was, one of our systems was considering that cash grant as a payment, and so it wasn’t allowing students to go in and pay the difference,” Hinojosa said.

According to Hinojosa, there is a $50 late payment fee as per the regular academic calendar, but due to the circumstances, the late fee was also extended with the purpose to allow students to have more time to pay.

Hinojosa said there were several departments that worked together to make this extension possible.

“Obviously, [UTRGV President Guy Bailey] makes the final decision, but there are several of us that worked together, both in Strategic Enrollment, in Academic Affairs, and in Finance and Administration, we really have a collegial team,” she said.

Students who would like to pay in person, have the opportunity to visit campus from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student Services Building in Edinburg and the Tower in Brownsville.

ASSIST will also be available for students who would like to pay online.

Nursing Junior, Rebecca Leal said the extension of the payment deadline will help students be more focused on their courses.

“This will definitely help students, it’s going to benefit them,” Leal said. “They are not going to focus their stress on worrying that they have to make the payment and they can just focus on school already, like, they know they already have that extra time.”

Hinojosa said if students are going to campus to pay their tuition, to remember to follow the protocol that UTRGV has implemented for safety during the COVID-19 pandemic.
