UTRGV is continuing to offer aid for the summer to students who are enrolled for six credit hours before May 3 through its Summer Liftoff program.
According to the Summer Liftoff’s website, the program was created to provide eligible students including current, incoming, transient, graduate and international with aid “up to $500 for tuition and mandatory fees.”
Associate Vice President for Strategic Enrollment Griselda Castilla said that the School of Medicine students do not qualify.
Castilla further explains that this program is also intended to show the support UTRGV has for its students by keeping them educationally motivated despite the challenges caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We also want to ensure that students continue strong in their educational endeavors,” she said. “So, this is a way for us to encourage our students to enroll for at least six hours.”
Castilla added that UTRGV has seen an increase in enrollment after last summer’s aid and hopes to see that continue this summer.
“We’ve been very fortunate here at UTRGV that while other institutions are seeing decreases in enrollment, we continue to see increases,” she said.
According to a news release from UTRGV, as a result of last year’s relief program, summer enrollment increased by a record amount of 27.8% which accounts for approximately 17,582 new students.
Biomedical science sophomore Dhruva Sudershan is excited to receive this aid from the university.
“I think it’s a very good idea that they’ve implemented this especially because of COVID…[since] it [helps] cover some of the cost for…classes,” Sudershan said.
He also said that he hopes that the university continues to provide aid once classes return to in person.
Castilla said this aid is contingent, but students can expect the tuition aid to be in effect on April 12th.
