The Edinburg Mayoral elections took place Tuesday, Nov. 2 and the results point to a runoff between Mayoral candidates Ramiro Garza Jr. and Richard Molina.

As of Nov. 4, the unofficial results for the election according to the Hidalgo County Elections office are as follows:

  • Richard Molina – received 3,462 votes making up 43.05 % of total votes
  • Ramiro Garza Jr. – received 3,499 votes making up 43.51 % of total votes
  • Gilbert Enriquez – received 1,081 votes making up 13.44 % of votes

Because none of the candidates had 50 % of votes or more, candidates Molina and Garza are heading to a runoff election.

Vaquero Radio sat down with mayoral participants to hear their thoughts on the election and its results.

Former School Board member and former mayoral candidate Gilbert Enriquez says that although the election didn’t go the way he wanted it to, he hopes that the people of Edinburg make an educated vote in the runoff.

“Vote for the candidate that you believe possesses the qualities that the city of Edinburg require[s]. And that’s someone that’s gonna be transparent, that’s someone who’s gonna be accountable, that’s someone who’s gonna have ethical values…”

Enriquez says he will not run again in the near future to focus on his family and business.

Garza said he appreciates those who not only voted for him but voted in the elections in general and shared some of his plans if he was elected as Edinburg Mayor.

“I want to bring back trust to our city. I think it’s important we adopt a code of ethics for all of us as elected officials…initiate a 20/40 vision plan with our residents to invite them to town hall meetings to plan for our future.”

According to Garza, the runoff election will be Dec. 14.

Vaquero Radio reached out to current Edinburg Mayor Richard Molina but did not hear back for comment.
