After 25 years, Moliere comes back to UTRGV

For the first time in over 25 years, The UTRGV Department of Theatre will produce two plays by French Playwright Moliere, “Two Precious Maidens Ridiculed” and “The Flying Doctor”.

“After Shakespeare, Moliere is probably the most highly regarded playwright in the world, from at least in the modern era.  …So for us to go about 25 years without doing any of his plays, really created a great opportunity for us to bring him to our stage,” Eric Wiley said.

Show Director and Professor of Theatre Eric Wiley chose Moliere’s work for both his comedic value and uplifting nature.

“I had wanted to direct Moliere for many years. I thought something like Moliere would be a good choice because first of all it’s funny but it’s also kind of uplifting.  It’s a neoclassical view of humanity, so it’s kind of a life affirming worldview that Moliere has.”

The event is divided into two one-act plays, “Two Precious Maidens Ridiculed” and “The Flying Doctor”, both dealing with themes of lies and deceit in comedic ways.

The show also marks the first time a UTRGV production will feature live sound.  Choreographer and former student Tirzah Claus is the person tasked with using the sound and crafting a routine for it.

“Really it just comes down to communication because we’re using two live violinists. …adding live music is always a really cool element.  There has to be communication between the violinist and myself so that we are on the same page because I’m choreographing to what they’re playing… So we just have to be really solid with the sections of the music,” Clause said.

Stage Manager and Theatre major Dalia Emanuel could not be more confident.

“I’m very confident in my cast and my crew and everybody,” Emanuel said. “…I believe everyone who goes to watch the show will have an amazing time.  I believe in the play.”

The play will run from Nov. 18-20 at the Albert L. Jeffers Theatre.  Students, faculty and staff can buy tickets with a UTRGV ID for $5
