The UTRGV Career Center is open to all UTRGV students, giving them resources such as resume templates and professional development to help prepare for job applications, interview preparation and career planning.
Career advisor at the Career Center and liaison for the Robert C. Vackar College of Business and Entrepreneurship, Jerome Wiggins, explained the services available to students.
“We help with getting students prepared for the workforce, and that could be anything from resume reviews, mock interviews, job search strategies, learning where to go to attend some of our events, like the career fair,” Wiggins said.
Career advisor Brandon Garcia said one way students can strengthen their resumes is by describing their accomplishments with specific numbers rather than simply listing responsibilities.
Garcia added measurable results can help demonstrate the impact of a student’s experience.
“Quantity also is just numbers that are added to the actual bullet points of, like, how many things have you actually done? For example, if you’re a tutor, how many students do you tutor a week?” Garcia said.
The Career Center also provides resume guides and templates to help students organize their education, work experience, extracurricular activities and skills.
Senior accounting major, Mauro Nunez, said using one of these templates helped him recognize experiences he had previously left off his resume.
“They gave out a resume template, and it really did help me a lot. It was able to give me insight into what I should put on it because before I didn’t have, like, the clubs I was a part of,” Nunez said.
Students can also use VMock, an online platform that provides personalized feedback on resumes, or schedule an appointment with a career advisor through 12twenty.
The Career Center offers services on both the Edinburg and Brownsville campuses, including drop-in advising for students seeking assistance.
