UTRGV hosted its annual Wrapping of the Letters, an event last Thursday, Oct. 22, on the Chapel Lawn at the Edinburg campus.
The event invited students to write their wishes for the future and leave them on the university’s letters, which will be burned during the upcoming Homecoming celebrations.
Assistant director for Student Activities, Cristina Rodriguez, explained the purpose of the event.
“We have our students out here wrapping our UTRGV letters, getting ready for Burning of the Letters that’s happening the following week, right before the Homecoming game,” Rodriguez said.
Students also had the opportunity to help prepare the letters for the ceremony, a process involving wrapping materials around the metal structures.
Member of UTRGV’s inaugural 2025 Homecoming Royalty, Adolfo Salinas, described the physical effort involved in preparing the letters.
“The metal bars that they used to build out the letters is really, really heavy, and you have to make everything really tight. And so it’s a good, you know, little workout,” Salinas said.
The Campus Activities Board, one of the main organizers of the event, helped coordinate the Wrapping of the Letters tradition.
Pride and Signature Events chair for the Campus Activities Board, Jada Lopez, highlighted a new development this year, showcasing the growth of the event through the years.
“For the first time, we actually did Wrapping of the Letters at the Brownsville campus this year,” Lopez said.
Along with participating in the tradition, students could enjoy music and snacks while connecting with fellow Vaqueros.
The wrapped letters will be featured in the Burning of the Letters ceremony the following week, ahead of UTRGV’s Homecoming football game, which will be Oct. 31 at 7 p.m. at the Robert and JaneT Vackar Stadium.
