The UTRGV men and women’s golf teams closed their fall seasons Tuesday, Oct. 20, with both finishing among the top 11 teams in their respective tournaments.
The men’s team competed at The Clerico, hosted by Oral Roberts University at Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa, Oklahoma. The Vaqueros finished tied for ninth with a three-round team score of 882, placing ahead of North Texas University, University of Texas at El Paso and San Jose State.
One of the team’s strongest performances came during the second round, when UTRGV recorded a four-over-par 284, the lowest second-round team score in the field. Sophomore Brock Porter and senior Gabriel Dulon Villoslada led the Vaqueros individually, tying for 13th place with three-round scores of 216.
Meanwhile, the women’s team competed in the Diamante Intercollegiate in Hot Springs Village, Arkansas. According to a UTRGV Athletics news release, the Vaqueros finished 11th out of 20 teams with a three-round total of 881. The team also finished ahead of the other Southland Conference programs participating in the tournament.
Senior Natalia Rodriguez led the women’s team, tying for 12th individually with a score of 213. Freshman Kanyanat Kamphoo also finished among the tournament’s top 20, tying for 17th with a total of 214.
The women’s team also opened the tournament with a one-over-par 289, tying for the fifth-lowest single-round team score in program history. That performance gave the Vaqueros an encouraging start to their final tournament of the fall.
With both teams finishing their fall schedules, the results provide a foundation to build on as they prepare for the spring season. The men’s team is scheduled to return to competition at the Compadres Collegiate in Mexico, Feb. 7-9, while the women’s team will look to carry its fall progress into its next phase of competition.
