
Baseball (13-15, 5-7)
- Tuesday night matchup vs. Texas A&M Corpus Christi
The Vaqueros game against the Islanders was postponed due a positive test of COVID-19 of a Tier I member within the Texas A&M Corpus Christi program.
Both schools are working to reschedule the game for later this season.
- Thursday night 0-3 defeat vs. California Baptist University
The Vaqueros were shutout for the first time since their opening series loss to Kansas State, 0-4, last season.
In the seventh inning, the Vaqueros had the bases loaded with two outs. Freshman left fielder Spencer Serven struck out to end the inning and the team’s best opportunity to score a run.
Lancer junior starting pitcher Chris Burcia threw a complete game, only allowing four hits and striking out six in route towards his fifth win of the season.
- Friday afternoon seven inning 2-3 defeat vs. California Baptist University
In the first game of the doubleheader, the Lancers took an early advantage with a graduate first baseman John Glenn two-RBI single to center field.
The Vaqueros responded in the bottom half of the first as junior right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. reached on a fielding error by freshman shortstop Marty Muñoz which allowed graduate catcher Conrado Diaz to score.
In the third, the Lancers scored on a junior right fielder Ulises Caballero RBI-double.
UTRGV made a late push in the sixth scoring graduate second baseman Andy Atwood from third on an RBI-groundout by junior DH Brett Cain to first.
- Friday evening 2-3 defeat vs. California Baptist University
The Vaqueros fell in heartbreaking fashion with a two-out RBI-single from freshman PH Connor Clift in the top of the ninth.
The Lancers scored runs in the second and fourth with a junior second baseman Harrison Spohn RBI-double and a junior DH Russell Stevenson RBI-single, respectively.
The two runs for the Vaqueros came early on wild pitchers from Lancer freshman starter Liam Rocha as graduate third baseman Conrado Diaz scored in the first and graduate shortstop Christian Sepulveda came across in the second.
- Saturday morning 4-3 victory vs. California Baptist University
The Vaqueros handed the Lancers their first conference loss of the season with a walk-off bunt from graduate left fielder Elijah Alexander that scored graduate Christian Sepulveda from third.
The other three runs for the Vaqueros came in the fifth as freshman left fielder Spencer Serven, graduate catcher Conrado Diaz and junior right fielder Freddy Rojas Jr. all brought in runs with aid from three CBU defensive errors.
After scoring two runs in the seventh, the Lancers were able to even up the game in the ninth with a freshman PH David Martin infielder’s choice RBI on a fielding error by Sepulveda.
Senior closer Chase Bridges was the winning pitcher throwing 0.2 innings of work forcing a groundout and flyout.
Men’s Soccer (5-0-2, 5-0-2)
- Wednesday night overtime 4-3 victory vs. Houston Baptist University in Houston
After trailing at the half 0-3, the Vaqueros scored goals in the 60th, 65th and 73rd minutes courtesy of sophomore forward Martin Tellez, senior forward William Akio and junior defender Elyad Shojaei.
The game-winning goal came in the 93rd minute as sophomore forward Juan Rivera found the back of the net to complete the comeback and help the Vaqueros remain unbeaten on the season.
Women’s Soccer(8-6-2, 5-6-1)
- Sunday afternoon 1-2 defeat vs. Dixie State in St. George, Utah
Two early goals by the Trailblazers in the 4th and 40th minute downs the Vaqueros in the first of two at Greater Zion Stadium.
The Vaqueros lone goal came in the 58th on a junior forward Emily Zapata PK after junior forward Shentatious Knox was brought down hard by junior defender Ashlyn Vantussenbroek.
Freshman goalkeeper Macie Blohowaik started for the Vaqueros and made five saves.
Men’s Tennis (3-15, 0-2)
- Saturday afternoon 3-4 defeat vs. Prairie View A&M
The Vaquero earned the opening point of the match in doubles with 6-1 victories on court No. 1 and 2 with partners sophomore Samuel de Felipe Garcia, junior Carlo Izurieta and sophomore Te Kani Williams, senior Mateo Schmit.
In singles, Garcia and Williams picked up wins on court No. 2 and 3 but the Panthers would win the remaining matchups that included two points by default as no Vaquero played on court No. 5 and 6.
Women’s Tennis (3-15, 1-3)
- Monday morning 1-6 defeat vs. Houston
In a match that was originally supposed to take place Feb. 19, after rescheduling twice due to Winter Storm Uri and inclement weather, was finally played.
The lone win of the day for the Vaqueros came on court No. 3 as sophomore Katarina Sasaroga took down freshman Laura Slisane in comeback fashion, 4-6, 6-4,10-8.
The Vaqueros fell in their remaining singles matches and were swept in doubles.
- Monday afternoon 0-6 defeat vs. Houston
In the second game of the matchday, the Vaqueros were swept as they fell in the singles-only matchup.
Freshman Isabelle Bahr retired in the second set on court No. 1 due to injury and the Vaqueros defaulted on court No. 6.
- Thursday afternoon WAC Cluster 0-7 defeat vs. Grand Canyon University
The Vaqueros were swept in the opening match of the WAC Cluster at the Orville Cox Tennis Center by the conference-leading Antelopes.
This was the second time this season the Vaqueros have been swept without a single victory in the matchday, including doubles.
- Saturday morning WAC Cluster 2-5 defeat vs. Tarleton State
The Vaqueros were able to pick wins in singles with freshman Kristina Mamicova and sophomore Sandra Putz on court No. 4 and 6, respectively, before dropping their remaining battles.
The Texans swept in doubles with 7-5, 7-6 and 6-3 victories.
- Sunday morning 3-4 defeat vs. Prairie View A&M
The Vaqueros fell in a hard fought battle in the final home matchday of the season.
After falling on court No. 1 in doubles, the Vaqueros charged back with a 6-2 victory at the No. 2 spot with sophomore Sandra Putz and freshman Valeria Montero and a 6-3 win on court No. 3 from sophomore Ana Platisa and freshman Kristyna Mamicova.
Platisa would pick up the first win in singles on court No. 2 to give the Vaqueros a 2-0 lead.
After the Panthers picked up a victory on court No. 6, Putz would help UTRGV to a 3-1 lead by beating freshman Ruju Chauhan 6-1, 7-6.
Despite junior Alicia Thal (4-6, 6-3, 7-5) and Montero (2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (5)) going the distance the Vaqueros couldn’t capture the elusive and clinching fourth point of the day.
Volleyball (2-15, 2-12)
- Thursday night quarterfinal 0-3 defeat vs. No.5 Chicago State in Orem, Utah at the WAC Tournament
The Vaqueros fell in straight sets (17-25, 21-25, 22-25) to close out the 2021 season as the Cougars earned their first-ever WAC Tournament victory and advanced to the semifinals.
Sophomore outside hitter Victoire Nama ended with a game-high 14 kills on 33 total attacks.
