A workshop called Junk Journaling invited students to relax, reflect and express themselves through art Wednesday at the Student Union Palmetto Room on the Edinburg campus.
Hosted by Talk About It Vaqueros, the event aimed to help students manage stress and explore their emotions by crafting personal journals out of recycled materials.
The workshop also featured a variety of handcrafts that encouraged participants to reflect on their emotions, creativity and future planning.
Political science senior and Talk About It member, Alison Dominguez said the goal was to merge art and handcrafts with emotional well-being and self-reflection.
“So what we decided to do was combine that and talk about obviously our workshops and what we offered to students and kind of connect students with a way to learn how to relieve stress and get away [from] their issues,” Dominguez said.
Biology senior and member of Talk About it, Clarissa Dueñas explained the activity allowed participants to visualize their goals and express their creativity.
“Right now, we’re just doing like vision boards. So, the students can do … make their future into [a] journal,” Dueñas said.
UTRGV sophomore Alexis Tamez, said the event provided a break from daily stress.
“It’s basically all about you. And I know, like, some people can have, like, a really hard time, like, thinking really deeply about themselves because due to other responsibilities. But it’s really nice and, like, it’s a real destressor,” Tamez, said.
Talk About It organizers said they hope Junk Journaling encourages students to slow down, reflect and take time for themselves amid their busy academic lives.
