Fans say the UTRGV Volleyball team gave them a season to remember as it went 15-1 and battled its way to the Southland Conference Championship match, where it fell to Stephen F. Austin in a 3-0 loss.
Dance education freshman Elena Guiza said even though the Vaqueros lost in the championship match, the team’s mindset and determination set the stage for an even stronger season next year.
“Martina Franco, she said in a conference that they focus on the next game rather than focusing on how they did in the past, which I think is very important for them to continue to have that mindset for the whole team coming into the next season,” Guiza said.
Criminal justice freshman Issac Muñoz said the team having a lot of international players helped them reach the success it had.
“They were all able to bond on the fact that they weren’t from here or from the U.S. and they were all from other places,” Muñoz said.
Vaquero Radio tried to contact the UTRGV Volleyball Team for interviews after their conference championship loss, but coaches and players were unavailable.
SFA head coach Debbie Humphreys said she credited UTRGV’s defensive pressure for making the championship match a challenge in a post-game interview with SLC.
“RGV blocked phenomenally today … holding them to a low percentage with all those weapons they’ve got, I’m really pleased with our defense,” Humphreys said.
